The Institute of International Law is mainly engaged in teaching and scientific research in the direction of public international law, international economic law and private international law. The Institute has 13 members, including Prof. Li Shouping, an academician of the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) and president of the Beijing Society of International Law, and Prof. Tony Carty, an internationally renowned expert in the philosophy of international law, and Prof. Yang Chengming, an expert in international human rights law, who is the director of the Institute.

The Institute of International Law focuses on the research of international aerospace law, international dispute prevention and settlement, international human rights law and other fields, and has published a series of books on international law of Beijing Institute of Technology, and undertaken a number of national legislative research projects such as the Regulations on Development of Civil Aircraft Industry. Among them, the Institute is a domestic leader in the research of international aerospace law, and the academic journal China Space Law Annual enjoys a high reputation, and it is the unit that has undertaken the largest number of Social Science Fund projects related to international space law in China.

The Institute of International Law offers doctoral, master's and undergraduate courses in international law, and has undertaken the construction of an all-English master's degree programme in international law, with all courses being taught in English. The Institute has made remarkable achievements in providing courses on international space law, and has trained students to participate in the ManFred Lachs International Space Law Moot Court Competition on several occasions, winning the first and second place in the China Region. The Institute is a key participant in the Marxist Theory Research and Construction Project textbook "Public International Law", and the textbook edited by the Institute, "Course on Public International Law", was awarded the Beijing Higher Education Excellence Textbook.
